Chicago Avenue Bridge Over River/viaduct West of River and Halsted Viaduct N/S of Chicago Avenue (Phase II and construction) As of March 21, 2025, this project has been released by the owner for General Contractor bidding. The project is located along the Chicago Avenue and Halsted Street corridors, both of which serve as vital links within the City of Chicago's transportation infrastructure. The existing Chicago Avenue at Halsted Street Viaduct is a thirteen-span structure consisting of multi-girder spans supported on open concrete piers with abutments at opposite ends of Chicago Avenue and at the south end of Halsted Street. The Chicago Avenue corridor includes the Chicago Avenue Bridge over the North Branch of the Chicago River, which is considered a temporary bridge that was recently constructed to replace the previous double leaf, trunnion style Bascule Bridge. The project is bound by residential, industrial, and commercial properties, most notably the proposed Bally's Casino development replacing the Chicago Tribune printing and distribution facility in the southeast quadrant of the intersection. The scope of work includes replacement of the viaduct superstructure and complete replacement of the Chicago Avenue River Bridge. The Chicago Avenue River Bridge is to be replaced with a tied-arch bridge that will accommodate four travel lanes and sidewalks. The tied-arch span will have accommodations for future lifting in accordance with Coast Guard Permit requirements. The viaduct structure is to be replaced in kind to match existing spans while utilizing existing foundations. Steel beams will be utilized for the superstructure. Abutments will be modified to account the profile raise on Chicago Avenue. Cantilevered sidewalk on the east leg of Chicago Avenue will be also modified account for the proposed roadway profile raise. Vaulted walks on Halsted Street will be improved as determined by existing conditions. Other improvements include, but are not limited to, the removal of existing pavement and pavement surface; installation of hot-mix asphalt binder and surface course; full-depth P.C.C. bus pad, driveway pavement construction; ADA accessible ramps; installation of new roadway lighting and traffic signal infrastructure including Audible Pedestrian Signals (APS), electrical and utility connections, traffic signal modifications; drainage structure replacement, and surface drainage improvements to the complete satisfaction of, approval and acceptance by the City. This description of work is intended to be general in nature and is neither a complete description nor a limitation on the work to be performed. Contractor shall perform all Work described in the Contract Documents or reasonably inferable as necessary to produce the results specified therein, except to the extent specifically indicated in the Contract Documents to be the responsibility of others. Although a firm timeline has not been confirmed, construction is not expected to start prior to late second quarter 2025. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
