Multi-modal recommendations for infrastructure improvements including transit, rail, highways and bridges. Study area: Fort Erie to 407 in Burlington. The final strategy (phase 1) includes the following multi-modal elements: A -- Optimizing the existing transportation network; B -- Supporting transit initiatives that are consistent with the Metrolinx Regional Transportation Plan and the GO Transit 2020 Strategic Plan, as well as recommendations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the non-roadway of transportation; C -- Several highway widening and new highway corridor recommendations, including; HAMILTON & HALTON: Widening of key highway facilities by two or more lanes to address medium term transportation needs. In addition, a future study is recommended to identify a longer-term transportation strategy; Lane expansion is under consideration for the Burlington Skyway as well as a new bridge structure crossing the Welland Canal. HAMILTON TO NIAGARA: Widening of QEW to eight (8) lanes (including HOV lanes). Continue to monitor traffic volumes on the QEW to determine capacity requirements beyond 2031; NIAGARA: New highway corridor connecting Highway 406 south of Welland to the QEW near Fort Erie. TIMELINE: Project is conceptual. The Ministry of Transportation released their final report Connecting the GGH: A Transportation Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe March 2022 which will inform transportation planning for the Greater Golden Horseshoe area until 2051. Projects will be followed separately as they proceed. Coverage of this report is discontinued.
