During the comprehensive planning process that took place during the early 1990's, citizen task forces recommended the creation of a citywide greenway system. This recommendation resulted in the creation of specific policies and strategies, as well as the identification of greenways on the land use map in the adopted 1993 Framework for the Future. This effort was strengthened with the 2001 version of the Framework for the Future by relating water quality improvement strategies to the existing greenway recommendations to be consistent with the State's Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act. This project remains a part of the current Framework for the Future 2030. Greenways are corridors of protected open space established for the conservation and enhancement of natural resources and for recreation purposes. Greenways often follow natural land or water features and connect nature preserves, parks, cultural features and historic sites with each other and with populated areas. As part of this effort, City Council adopted the Stoney Run Greenway Corridor Plan on July 8, 2003. This project will be split in three phases with the first phase being land acquisition, followed by two phases of construction. The second phase of this project will construct the initial public access/parking off Old Courthouse Way and first section of trails on the City-owned property along the Stoney Run watershed between Old Courthouse Way and Denbigh Boulevard. With the third phase completing the construction of the trails, parking and other passive interpretive and recreation amenities. The City will be seeking grant funding through the Virginia Land and Water Conservation Fund and as identified in the Stoney Run Greenway Corridor Plan, using funds from the BMP Banking Program as available.ses. As of March 14, 2022, this project is currently in the FY 2022-2026 CIP . Funding for this project is allotted in the city's capital improvement plan for construction Fy 2024. A firm timeline has not been established; however, construction is scheduled for Fiscal Year 2024. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change.
