Site work for a transportation facility in Kitchener, Ontario. Conceptual plans call for site work for a transportation facility.
Construction of a Light Rapid Transit (LRT) corridor with terminal at Ainslie Street terminal site at Ainslie St and Main St. Stage 2 ION will see the ION Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service between Kitchener and Cambridge converted to Light Rapid Transit (LRT) network across the region's three urban centres. Preferred route is from Fairway Road, Hwy 8, King St E, Preston, Eagle St N, Pinebush Rd, Hespeler Rd to Beverley St to approximately Main St. Phase One would have 19 stations and voer 19 km. Phase 2 would have 8 stations and cover 18 km. TIMELINE: Plans are conceptual. Regional Council have approved the project. Funding from the provincial and federal governments will be required in order to advance the project. Next steps include submitting for funding, field work, various assessments, and more detailed design. Further update may be confirmed summer 2026. Preliminary cost estimate for the project is 1.25 billion. Project will proceed pending provincial/federal funding assistance. Project website is: www.Stage2ION.ca.
