Howard County, Maryland (the County) desires to secure professional services to provide civil engineering and surveying services to upgrade Dorsey Run Road (DRR) to a three lane roadway using a 50-foot roadway section (curb to curb) with 6-foot sidewalks on both sides of the roadway. The roadway will be striped for two-way traffic with a continuous center turn lane and a marked bike lane. DRR is an existing rural two-lane roadway that traverses a floodplain and crosses an active CSX railroad spur. The design speed for this project is 40 mph. This project is approximately 1.2 miles in length. These improvements will include roadway widening and new construction along the alignment. The project limits are from the MD 175 intersection to a termination point just south of an existing CSX railroad bridge overpass, (DRR Capital Project No. J- 4110-02). This project was at 60% design stage before it was placed on hold. This project has an established line and grade approved by the County and will serve as our starting point. The selected firm will provide additional alignment studies to minimize impacts to the environmental features and to the railroad crossing while determining the new bridge opening and elevation over Dorsey Run. The southern limit includes an existing CSX overpass that has a 57-foot clear zone between abutments. The proposed improvements need to fit between the CSX abutments and tie into Capital Project J-4110-02. As of May 29, 2024, the design firm has been selected. Further details regarding firm construction and completion timelines have not been released.
