The purpose of the project is to reduce flood risk on the KK River for approximately 300 residential and commercial structures located in the one percent annual probability floodplain between S. 6th Street and S. 16th Street. The project also improves public safety (i.e. reduce drowning risk) and improves aquatic and riparian habitat conditions. The project scope consists of widening the channel corridor from a width of 60 feet to approximately 200 feet within the project area to improve the passage of flood flows. Acquisition and removal of 83 homes and modifications to City bridges and utilities are required to create the wider channel section. The project also replaces over 4,000 linear feet of District-owned concrete channel lining with a more naturalized channel between S. 6th Street to S. 16th Street. The acquisition and removal of the structures between S. 6th Street and S. 16th Street is managed under W40002. The increase in total project cost is due to updated cost estimates. The impact on the operating budget would take effect five years after construction is complete and the vegetation is established. The project is included in the 2024 Capital Improvement Project. As June 11, 2024, a design firm has been selected. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and be complete in 2031. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
