The chimney is located behind the University of Kentucky School of Art and Visual Studies located at 236 Bolivar Street in Lexington, Kentucky. The chimney is no longer in use as a functioning chimney, but currently supports various cellular equipment elements. It is constructed of radial brick masonry and stands approximately 150 feet tall with a base diameter of approximately 16 feet. The project consists of structural repairs and restoration to extend the life of the chimney while preserving the historical nature of the structure. Repair work is generally categorised as follows: removal and replacement of top 15 feet (+/-) of chimney due to extensive cracking and warping of chimney; tuck-pointing of open mortar joints full height of chimney; replacing damaged or missing brick faces; cleaning and painting of steel bands; application of dry-mix shotcrete lining on all interior surfaces of chimney (Alternate 1); installation of new concrete cap, and removal and replacement of lightening protection system. Final award of Contract will be made on the basis of the lowest, responsive and responsible bid which offers the best value. The time for substantial completion for all phases shall be one hundred sixty (160) Calendar Days and Final Completion shall be thirty (30) days thereafter. Substantial Completion will include all site restoration completed, site clean-up and fully functional. No bidder may withdraw his bid for a period of sixty (60) days after the date set for the opening of bids. Clerical errors and omissions in the computation of the lump sum shall not be cause for withdrawal of the bid without forfeiture of bid bond. Bids may be withdrawn in person only, prior to the closing date for receipt of bids. The University of Kentucky, Construction Procurement Section, reserves the right to reject any and all bids and to waive all formalities and/or technicalities where the best interest of the University may be served.
