Key project elements include the replacement of four bridges that connect Bruckner Expressway and Bruckner Boulevard over Amtrak and CSX rail lines, improved pedestrian access, and a new community park. The full scope of work on the four bridges included construction of three new ramps, deck replacement, widened exit ramps, and the removal of existing pier bents. The team also completed a new multi-steel plate girder bridge, a new pedestrian bridge over the Amtrak/CSX railway, and a shared-use path under the Bruckner Expressway. According to a statement from Skanska, the project was delivered on time and under budget. "We are thrilled to celebrate the first phase of the improvement project that will significantly improve the day-to-day lives of the local community and thousands of commuters that travel to, from, and through Hunts Point and the surrounding region each day," said Michael Viggiano, executive vice president of Skanska's East Coast civil operations. "It's an honor to have had the opportunity to make these long-awaited improvements to an essential New York access point and provide a safer and more efficient interchange." Improvements to the Bruckner Expressway and surrounding roadways are the latest component of a $1.7 billion initiative led by the New York State Department of Transportation to improve infrastructure and pedestrian access across the Hunts Point Peninsula. Earlier this month, New York governor Kathy Hochul revealed the third and final phase of the initiative, which includes reconstruction of the Bruckner Expressway interchange with Sheridan Boulevard and other improvements that will reduce congestion, enhance bicycle and pedestrian safety, and provide easier access to the Hunts Point Terminal Market, one of the largest wholesale food distribution centers in the world ______________________ https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-start-644-million-project-replace-bronx-river-parkway-bridge-north Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that construction has begun on a $64.4 million project to replace the bridge carrying the Bronx River Parkway over the Metro-North Railroad in the Wakefield and Woodlawn Heights sections of the Bronx. The project will replace a 72-year-old structure with a modern, multi-girder steel structure that will improve travel and enhance safety along this vital artery for commuters in the Metropolitan Area. Additionally, a nearby concrete arch bridge carrying the parkway over the Bronx River will be repaired and the northbound exit ramp from the Bronx River Parkway to Bronx Boulevard will be extended by approximately 70 feet to reduce congestion and further enhance safety. "Investments in infrastructure are one of the surest ways to super charge New York's economy and at the same time create a more resilient transportation network that keeps people and goods on the move," Governor Hochul said. "The Bronx River Parkway is one of New York City's most critical travel corridors, and with this bridge replacement now complete, we're not only ensuring the continued safe operation of the Metro-North line, but also fostering growth and prosperity for the entire region." Approximately, 450 Metro-North trains pass beneath the Bronx River Parkway Bridge every day. The new structure will feature a new, wider concrete deck, 12-feet-wide travel lanes and new shoulders on both sides of the bridge. Other improvements include new bridge abutments, retaining walls, LED lighting and drainage. Scheduled for completion in fall 2024, the new bridge will have an estimated service life of about 75 years. Improvements to the nearby concrete arch bridge over Bronx River will include new concrete safety barriers along each side of the bridge, wider travel lanes and new shoulders. Structural repairs will be made to the bridge's underside and the stone facade will be cleaned and a new protective coating added. Additionally, new LED lighting will be installed, handrails will be painted and new information signs will be placed along the adjacent Bronx River Greenway. The project also includes improvements to the Bronx River Parkway between Nereid Avenue and East 233rd Street, including new LED lighting, wider travel lanes, new shoulders, resurfaced pavement and new overhead sign structures. To better manage traffic volumes, signal timings will be recalibrated at the exit ramp at East 236th Street and Bronx Boulevard, and at the intersection of Carpenter Street and East 236th Street. The project will also make landscape enhancements throughout the project limits, including the planting of 23 new trees and 189 shrubs. In order to minimize impacts on the traveling public, lane closures during construction will largely be limited to weekends and overnight hours. State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said, "This important project demonstrates Governor Hochul's commitment to building back our infrastructure to better serve New Yorkers and meet the challenges of the 21st century. This new bridge and all the improvements being made along this vital corridor, will enhance safety and improve traffic flow throughout this busy section of the Bronx." Representative Jamaal Bowman: "New Yorkers deserve 21st century infrastructure that centers around safety, accessibility, and equity, and I'm excited that ground has now been broken on this important project to modernize the Bronx River Parkway. As Congress works to pass substantial investments in all aspects of our nation's infrastructure, I'm looking forward to working with Governor Hochul and the rest of our state and local government to ensure the longevity of our transit networks." Senator Alessandra Biaggi said, "Strengthening New York State's infrastructure is critical to ensure our community's long-term safety. This project will not only protect commuters, it will limit congestion and reduce travel time as well. I want to thank Governor Kathy Hochul for prioritizing the Bronx River Parkway bridge in the North Bronx and investing in our State's public infrastructure." Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz said, "The Bronx River Parkway is a vital piece of infrastructure for both Bronxites and commuters from the Hudson Valley. Like many areas throughout New York and the nation, it is critical that our government invests in this infrastructure so that it can last many more decades. Thank you to Governor Hochul and the NYS Department of Transportation for giving this area, where the parkway crosses Metro-North tracks and the Bronx River itself, the attention and investment it needs." Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said, "Ensuring safety, improving infrastructure and reducing congestion to this vital artery that connects commuters in the Metropolitan Area is much needed in the northern section of The Bronx. Thank you Governor Kathy Hochul and New York State Department of Transportation for beginning this vital work." Council Member Eric Dinowitz said, "I'm thrilled that the North Bronx is getting this critical investment in our infrastructure, making it safer and more convenient for commuters to cross the Bronx River Parkway. These much needed improvements prove that state leadership is paying attention to the Bronx. I'd like to thank Governor Hochul for her commitment to our great borough." _____________ https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-announces-start-451-million-project-reconstruct-key-ramp-cross-bronx-expressway Ramp from Northbound Sheridan Boulevard to Westbound Cross Bronx Expressway in the Bronx to be Rebuilt and Four Nearby Bridges Repaired Project Builds on the State's Unprecedented Investment in the South Bronx Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the start of a $45.1 million project to reconstruct and realign the 700-foot-long entrance ramp leading from northbound Sheridan Boulevard to westbound Cross Bronx Expressway (Interstate 95) in the Bronx. The 70-year-old ramp will be replaced by a modern structure with wider shoulders, concrete protective barriers and a smoother curvature that will ease traffic flow and enhance safety along this busy corridor. Reconstruction of the ramp, which handles more than 8,000 vehicles a day, will help keep highway traffic off local roads. Structural repairs will also be made to four nearby bridges and new landscaping added to the pedestrian and bicycle path leading to Starlight Park. The project complements the state's unprecedented investment to enhance infrastructure in the South Bronx. "This project will further the tremendous progress we have made in the South Bronx by removing the physical barriers that for years have hampered growth and impacted quality of life," Governor Cuomo said. "The reconstructed ramp and other improvements help to reduce congestion and create better travel conditions along this vital corridor, fostering vitality and economic opportunity throughout the community." The existing ramp, which currently consists of nine bridge spans, will be rebuilt using four spans, which will reduce the number of required bridge joints and significantly decrease future maintenance needs. Rebuilding with fewer spans, including the elimination of one pier that currently extends into the Bronx River, will also create more open space below the bridge and improve the environmental quality of the river. Scheduled for completion in spring 2023, the new ramp will provide a service life of approximately 75 years. New, energy-efficient LED lights will also be installed on the ramp. During construction, a temporary ramp will be built from southbound Sheridan Boulevard to the westbound Cross Bronx Expressway to ensure continued traffic flow. In addition, a temporary left turn signal will be installed at northbound Sheridan Boulevard to allow traffic to access the westbound Cross Bronx Expressway. Improvements - including bearing and joint replacements, pavement resurfacing and repairs to the concrete, railings and bridge decks - will also be made to three bridges along the Cross Bronx Expressway between West Farms Road and the Bronx River Parkway and the eastbound Cross Bronx Expressway exit ramp to southbound Sheridan Boulevard. Additionally, the project will plant native trees and vegetation to enhance the natural landscape along the pedestrian and bicycle pathway leading from East 177th Street to Starlight Park. This project builds on the South Bronx's transformational progress under Governor Cuomo's leadership that also includes the transformation of the Sheridan Expressway from an interstate highway to a pedestrian-friendly boulevard; the rehabilitation of the Bruckner Expressway; and the ongoing Hunts Point Access Improvement Project. New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said, "The start of this project marks another great step forward for the Bronx and demonstrates yet again Governor Cuomo's commitment to building a 21st Century transportation network that benefits all residents. The Department of Transportation is proud to have played a major role in helping to make the Governor's vision for a revitalized Bronx a reality through our work on the Hunts Point and the Sheridan Boulevard and Bruckner Expressway projects; and we are delighted to get going with this new and exciting project." ________ Rehabilitation of 6 Bridges on Cross Bronx Expwy between Boston Road & Bronx River Parkway in Bronx Co., NYC to address structural deficiencies and extend service life of structures.
