The City is currently working with MnDOT, Hennepin County and the Cities of Brooklyn Center and Minneapolis to convert TH 252 to a freeway to improve safety and reduce congestion. The project received state bonding funds in 2018 in the amount of $135 million. The estimated overall project cost is approximately $350 million. It is expected the study will recommend new interchanges at 85th Ave and Brookdale Drive. The agencies will submit for funding grants to help offset local costs associated with the project. These grants would likely be for 2024 or 2025. The city and Hennepin County were awarded $7 million in Federal Funds for the 85th Ave Interchange. The city is currently applying for $10 Million in Federal Funding for the Brookdale Drive Interchage. However, project development work, including design, environmental documentation and right of way acquisition would be necessary prior to any construction and would occur in the 2020-2024 time period. Construction is currently anticipated to begin in 2025. This project is currently in the FY 2022-2026 CIP. As of July 24, 2024, per owner, construction has not begun yet.
