The Power Plant houses two operational generating units (7 and 8). Units 5 and 6 were decommissioned in 1986. This project is to remove the Unit 5 boiler and turbine/generator, and remove the Unit 6 boiler. This equipment is outdated and unusable in its current condition. The area that will be cleared through this project can be used to provide expanded maintenance shop space. The Unit 6 turbine/generator will not be removed as part of this project. The City is pursuing a separate CIP project to study Waste-to-Energy alternatives, one of which may be to develop a dedicated unit to dispose of refuse-derived fuel. As part of that study, the Unit 6 turbine/generator could be evaluated for rehabilitation. Until the possibility of re-purposing the Unit 6 turbine/generator is ruled out, it will remain in place.
