Saving Project...

Demolition, site work, paving and new construction of a civil project in East Hartford, Connecticut. Completed plans call for the demolition of a bridge / tunnel; for the construction of a bridge / tunnel; for site work for a bridge / tunnel; and for paving for a bridge / tunnel.

Commuters can expect to be impacted in the coming construction season, forced to take alternative routes, as two 50-year-old highway overpasses are closed and replaced this year, state officials said. Work should begin on both Route 2 and Interstate 84 bridges, state Transportation Department officials told the Town Council Tuesday in a presentation. The spans to be replaced include Route 2 westbound and the Governors Street overpass exit to the Founders Bridge where it travels over I-84. The second bridge being revamped is at the I-84 westbound Exit 54, over I-84 eastbound lanes. The first bridge is scheduled to close from April through July, while the second will be closed this month through November. Weather permitting, workers will demolish the bridges in late April, state officials said. Officials said they hope the coming bridge closures will have the same seamless transition as last year's bridge replacement on Route 2 eastbound toward Norwich and New London. Once the bridges close, detours will impact traffic coming from Governors Street with a destination over Founders Bridge into Hartford for the next six to nine months, officials said. The first bridge and two associated ramps will be closed for no more than 91 days, they said. The project contract includes a $10,000 per day fine for each day builders exceed the project schedule, officials said. This is the second project using an accelerated bridge construction technique, state officials said, which will ultimately replace the deteriorated superstructures of each bridge and their substructures. Commuters and residents can find more information at the state Transportation Department's website by entering the code "ctdot project 0171-0431" in the search engine. Per the owner, as of April 11, 2019, this is a design-build project and the designer of record is Lochner and the prime contractor is Middlesex Corporation. Owner states that construction is to start on April 23, 2019 for one bridge and May 6, 2019 for the other bridge.
