On a nice day it's filled with riders of all ages. Children following their parents. Mountain bike enthusiasts racing through the obstacles. Newbies putting themselves and their shiny new bicycles to the test. "It's awesome," said Gary Hopp, superintendent of Stony Creek, Lake St. Clair and Wolcott Mill Metroparks, of the completed trail system that winds its way up and down in loops around some of the prettiest areas of Stony Creek Metropark. "We've been working on it for a lot of years." Hopp said there's been a trail system in place for decades but it had become outdated. A master plan was created with input and recommendations from partners and regular users in 2016. Two-years later the Huron-Clinton Metroparks began its multi-year redevelopment project with a goal to extend and develop Shelden Trails into a premier multi-use, natural surface trail system in southeast Michigan. So, instead of driving to other areas known to have outstanding trail systems, riders can make Stony Creek their destination. In June 2020 the first phase of construction began. The project included redeveloping existing trails to improve user experience, accessibility, trail surface condition and signage. New trail segments, a beginner loop (Grom trail), a handcycle accessible trail and new mountain bike obstacles were added. Once a loop was completed it would be opened up for riders. Now it's done in time for the summer season. "The project was originally envisioned as being volunteer led, but the more we got into the project and the more we understood the great need for the project in the region, the Metroparks understood we needed to step up and provide additional resources and expertise to develop it into the world class trail system it is today," said Amy McMillan, director of the Metroparks. A large portion of Shelden Trails travel through the old Shelden estate, and were developed mainly from former roads, footpaths, and trails. The roads and footpaths ran among the estate's nine buildings (no longer in existence). Shelden estate was gifted to Stony Creek Metropark by Elizabeth Shelden in 1981 for public recreation. One of the reasons everyone is excited is because everyone will be able to use it. "There's something for every level of rider or trail user," Hopp said. The Metroparks worked closely with an advisory group, including the Clinton River Area Mountain Bike Association, to provide input. The outcome was a collaborative development process that highlighted problem areas of the previous trails and the development of a premier experience today. "The Metroparks is looking for opportunities throughout all of our parks to provide better user experience and accessibility to all of our really great facilities, and here at Shelden Trails is no different," McMillan said. The Shelden Trails Redevelopment Project cost just over $812,000, supported by Metroparks budget dollars and a long list of generous partners and donors. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority (HCMA) is requesting proposals from qualified, professional vendors for construction of natural surface trails at Stony Creek Metropark.
