Saving Project...

Renovation of a stadium in Humble, Texas. Completed plans call for the renovation of a stadium.

Dec 10, 2021 Humble ISD had a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning in downtown Humble to celebrate the new renovations to Charles Street Stadium. Members of the Humble ISD school board and the Humble City Council were on deck for the ceremony to celebrate the new beginnings for the renovated Charles Street Stadium. On HoustonChronicle.com: Despite playoff loss to North Shore, Atascocita seniors savor 'special' squad, season Humble ISD superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Fagan was front and center to lift her shovel and help pave the way for a new era for the new Charles Street Stadium. The previously razed stadium lot will make room for the new digs for several HISD sports programs. "In Humble ISD we value all children, all programs, all opportunities in all neighborhoods," said Fagan to the crowd. We want to make sure no matter where you are, you have a great opportunity to live and play and work and do all the things that make Humble ISD special." The renovations to Charles Street Stadium are a part of the 2018 bond. The stadium will be the home for Humble HS sub-varsity football team and serve as the home stadium for Humble Middle and Ross Sterling middle school football teams. The facility will also be the home to all Humble ISD soccer teams, both boys and girls programs. The plan is to have the stadium open in the late spring of 2022. Humble boys soccer coach Saul Keene, who has coached for over 20 years at Humble High School, is excited about the new facility that the Wildcats will be playing in. The Humble boys and girls are hoping to have their last District 21-6A game played at the newly built Charles Street Stadium, which would be against old rival Kingwood. "Fingers crossed that we can have our last match here against Kingwood," Keene said. "I think it will be very attractive to the community. I know all my family, my friends and my players families love coming to the games, but now they will have a brand-new facility, which will be much more attractive, and I think it will entice more people to come out to the games. It will be a lot more fun with having a lot of the community in the stands." The original stadium opened in 1942 as Humble stadium and was the main playing field for Charles Bender High School for 23 years before the new Humble High School and what is now Turner Stadium was built in 1965. The district will preserve the history of the old Charles Street stadium by adding the motto "Impossible is Un-American" to the stadiums new exteriors south wall. The motto dates back to 1918 when it was displayed on the original Humble High School building. The motto is also on an exterior door at the Humble's Charles Bender Performance Arts Center. Humble native and Mayor Norman Funderburk was on hand to celebrate the soon-to-be-built Charles Street Stadium and recall many fond memories of his time playing on the original field. "I played on this field, went through two-a-days and have seen so many sub-varsity games here," Funderburk said. "I'm so proud that the new stadium will still be right here in the heart of downtown Humble. We're excited about this new facility and what it will provide. We're very thankful to the district and athletic department for seeing this very worthwhile project through." Lady Wildcats coach Rachel Torres is in her second season at the girls' head coach and is looking forward for her team to build new traditions and establish a tough culture to last a long time. On HoustonChronicle.com: Atascocita's Odom, Summer Creek Aguilar named District 21-6A co-Coaches of the Year "The one thing that we preach is that we're one team and that we have one goal and we're one family," Torres said. "That's really important to our junior varsity and varsity programs. We have done a great job this last year-and-a-half building that culture and we're excited about the new beginning at the new Charles Street Stadium. Among the new amenities will be a newly installed turf, rebuilt concession stand, ticket booth, restrooms and storage space for equipment and maintenance. Other features include a new field house with locker rooms, meeting rooms and a conference room will be added along with a new press box. Fencing, parking and stadium entrances with controlled access for entering guests will be added along with ADA-compliant bleachers and sidewalks. The district is also hoping to host the Humble varsity football spring game at the new stadium as well. "We're blessed that it's going to be preserved that it's going to stay here," said Humble head football coach Marcus Schulz. "These athletes are excited. As a high school, we're excited for the facility. We're excited for the new memories and the new bonds that are going to be formed on this field." _________________________________________________________ Humble ISD is announcing the release of the following Competitive Sealed Proposal CSP# 2021-021 CHARLES STREET STADIUM RENOVATIONS.
