Fire Station #1 was constructed and occupied by the Fire Department in the spring of 1972 and little to no major improvements have been realized except for a kitchen and bathroom remodel during 2017. By the time construction on a renovation can begin, the station will be 55 years old. The original quarters were designed to house seven persons on overnight shifts. Currently the number of staff spending overnight shifts each day number 11. Makeshift changes have had to occur just to make this situation livable. Most industry standards recognize fire stations have a 50-year life expectancy before they need to be replaced. Fire Station #1 with its downtown location is the hub of public exposure to the community, hosting school tours, open houses, and general foot traffic of visitors to our City. With the construction of a new fire station (Station #3) slated to occur first, the beginning of this project will be moved out by two years but will need to be accomplished shortly after Fire Station #3 is occupied. As of June 5, 2023, this project is currently in the FY2024 CIP . Estimated start is late 2027. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
