We understand that the commissioners of Union County, with the assistance of federal funds, are planning to replace an existing bridge carrying Stone Road over Indian Creek (Structure No. Union 45). Based on the PFC plans provided by USI Consultants, Inc. (USI), the new structure is anticipated to consist of a three-span continuous reinforced slab bridge with integral end bents which are planned to be established near El. 970. The preliminary plans indicate that end bents will be supported on deep foundation elements. Based on our correspondence, we understand that interior piers will also be supported on deep foundation elements with an open pile bent scheme. The flowline of the creek is near El. 961, and the preliminary scour information provided on the plans indicate a Q500 scour near El. 949. Factored pile loads are not available at this time. The project limits extend between Sta. 15+50 and 21+95, Line "PR-A", for a total project length of about 650 ft. Roadway improvements consisting of widening to accommodate 3-ft wide shoulders and reconstruction of the existing road pavement is planned within the project extents. The earthwork (i.e., fill and cut) required to establish the embankment in order to accommodate the widening is anticipated to be up to 4 ft. Grade changes along the centerline are nominal (i.e., less than 1 ft). Sideslopes for the embankment are planned to be established at 3H:1V. Maintenance of traffic is planned to be accomplished via road closure and detour. Lastly, spill through slopes with Class 1 riprap at the surface are planned to be established at 2H:1V at the bridge abutments. At this time, other information such as the bridge loads and construction schedule are not known. In the event that the nature, design or location of the proposed construction changes, the conclusions and recommendations contained in this report shall not be considered valid unless the changes are reviewed, and the conclusions are modified or confirmed in writing.
