Site work and paving for a road / highway in Lubbock, Texas. Conceptual plans call for site work for a road / highway; and for paving for a road / highway.
The proposed extension would travel south from Lubbock to Lamesa where it would split with one route going to Midland and the other route going to Big Spring. Then, it would reform at Sterling City and head to San Angelo and Del Rio, travel along the Texas-Mexico border to Eagle Pass, shift east to Carrizo Springs, and terminate in Laredo. Midland, Odessa, and San Angelo representatives are pushing for the route to pass through their communities by way of the city of Big Spring. They say a data-based analysis will show the merits of routing I-27 along the Permian Basin's oil and gas fields, cotton production centers, and food processing plants. As of May 11, 2026, the project is still in the feasibility-study phase and working through the federal funding process. The Commissioners Court’s next regular meeting is set for May 19, 2026. A timeline for selecting a design firm and general contractor hasn’t been announced yet, and details about construction and completion schedules also remain unavailable.
