Renovation of a museum in Camp Springs, Maryland. Completed plans call for the renovation of a museum.
The four rooftop Air Conditioning Units (ACs), original to the 1983 construction, serving laboratory (lab) buildings 1, 2, 3 and 4 have reached the end of their useful life, and require replacement. The failing condition of the ACs endangers the integrity of the labs. If these systems were to fail, the operation of the lab area is likely to be affected due to the loss of proper indoor environmental and working conditions. SI had previously engaged URS Group, Inc. /Hartman-Cox LLP, a Joint Venture Architect/Engineer to complete a study of the existing HVAC systems serving the labs. SI has now directed URS Group to proceed with the preparation of Construction Documents (CD) as per the recommendations stated in the report. The CD scope of work (SOW) requires that the architect/engineer of URS produce Construction Documents for the replacement of custom air conditioning units (ACs) that serve Labs 1, 2, 3 and 4. Additional scope includes HVAC system upgrades in the seven lab rooms, which have high heat loads and inadequate exhaust capacity. The scope also includes converting existing pneumatic controls in the lab air valves and office VAV terminal units to DDC controls as well as HVAC Testing Adjusting and Balancing (TAB) in all lab buildings after the new AC units have been installed. As per the directive from SI each of the Labs 1, 2, 3 and 4 should be a stand-alone construction package, which will allow SI to schedule the work and provide cost flexibility to complete the construction. 2.2.1 Installing a temporary air handling unit AC-T1 along with temporary ductwork and piping, to serve Lab 3 and then Lab 4, during the construction period when permanent air handling units AC-12 and AC-11 are being installed on the roof. The removal of the temporary unit AC-T1, along with associated supports, ductwork and piping, after new airhandling units have been installedand commissioned is included in the scope of this project. Note that AC-T1 can serve only one Lab at a time. 2.2.2 Replace existing rooftop air handling unit AC-12 and AC-11 with new custom built unit in accordance with project drawings and specifications. 2.2.3 Replace existing pneumatic control system for laboratory exhaust and make-up air terminal units with new DDC controllers, devices and components. 2.2.4 Replace existing pneumatic controllers for office HVAC terminal units with new DDC controllers, devices and components
