City of Minneapolis committee on Tuesday approved half a million dollars to demolish one of the buildings on the former Kmart site. The actual Kmart building won't be demolished yet, as the U.S. Postal Service continues operating out of the building. It's rebuilding its south Minneapolis locations that were destroyed during the riots following the murder of George Floyd. The building slated for demolition is a former grocery store. The city initially planned to demolish both buildings on the site at the same time, but city staff believes it's "financially wise" to tear down just the one building this year, according to project background information. The city originally planned to demolish the Kmart store by the end of June 2020, but the Postal Service's relocation to the building pushed this date back.
