Renovation of a mixed-use development in Calgary, Alberta. Conceptual plans call for the renovation of a educational facility; and stadium.
Replacement of refrigerated slabs and the ice plant, and upgrades to meet modern safety and environmental standards. The new plant can be constructed within the existing west annex building allowing for the existing plant space to be reconfigured and used for storage or workshop space. The existing ammonia/ brine system will be replaced with a CO2 plant and a direct CO2 refrigerant piping system. Steel piping is to be used in the new system to accommodate the higher system pressures. The replacement of the Oval slab will include/will provide a new participant tunnel for infield access and a new infield ice melt pit. The new participant tunnel will improve player access to the hockey rinks and separate the public from the high-pressure refrigerant lines in the central service tunnel. The new ice melt pit will allow the ice resurface to remain on the inside of the Oval ice and allow for uninterrupted Oval use. Reconstruction of the slabs is intended to provide an opportunity to move the hockey rinks a further 5 metres apart to increase the infield area. TIMELINE: Design was completed in 2021. The project was cancelled by the owner as funds were reallocated for other required upgrades. This project will not proceed. Coverage of this report is discontinued. *The overall construction budget is estimated at $19 million.
