https://theconstructionbroadsheet.com/seattle-awards-m-contract-for-new-pier-p874-174.htm - The Seattle Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects has awarded a $34.5 million contract to local company Pacific Pile & Marine LP for construction of a new Pier 58, also known as Waterfront Park. The new pier is a replacement for the one removed in 2021. Construction on Pier 58 is scheduled to begin this fall and will take two years to complete. Also included in Pacific's contract is the removal of Pier 63, which has been closed since 2017 and is in poor condition. The city said that the dilapidated pier's removal will help the ecosystem there by allowing in more light, which will benefit the plants and marine life. "We're excited to reach this milestone and to be one step closer to having another new pier for the public to enjoy on our waterfront," said Angela Brady, director of the Waterfront Seattle Program, in a prepared statement. Pacific also built Pier 62, which opened in September 2020. The company rebuilt a portion of Pier 63 as well. "The new pier includes a marine habitat-sensitive design, will be a welcoming space for all and will include an iconic playground that will encourage visitors from near and far to visit," Brady said. The playground, project officials said, will have elements for all ages and abilities. Pier 58 also will include several areas where visitors can relax and look out on Elliott Bay, and the new venue will be able to host concerts, movies and other events. These projects are part of the $728 million Waterfront Seattle initiative, a city plan to build a park promenade that began construction after removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, a double-decked, elevated freeway that carried a portion of State Route 99. It was demolished in 2019 as part of a multibillion-dollar tunnel replacement. In addition to the pier work, Waterfront Seattle, which is scheduled to run through 2024, also includes construction of an elevated connection from Pike Place Market to the waterfront and improvements to the east-west connections between the city's downtown and Elliott Bay. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ As of April 13, 2022, the project has not been awarded.
