UNI's $40.5 million request for the state to fund the project was approved in 2020. While the state is funding the three-year project, John Deere's contribution will go towards a $4.2 million private fundraising campaign for furnishing and equipping the new facility. According to a release from the university, John Deere is the largest recruiter of UNI Department of Technology graduates. John Deere's $750,000 gift to the department is their largest to the university to date, but the company also advises academic programs and invests in students. "John Deere is excited to partner with the University of Northern Iowa on the renovation and expansion of the Industrial Technology Center. This modernization project aligns to the need for innovation and more advanced manufacturing technologies in our industry, which will also enable the future workforce. UNI is the only public university in Iowa with these specific technology degrees, which is an important pipeline of talent for the Cedar Valley," Becky Guinn, factory manager of Waterloo Works, said. "The Department of Technology specifically serves an important role in the state, as a large percentage of graduates continue employment in Iowa. The Industrial Technology Center was built in 1974 and after four decades, now lacks sufficient space and is in need of maintenance. The project will both renovate the existing spaces but also expand. The university says this expansion will allow the department to increase enrollment by 40 percent. A firm timeline for construction has not been established. *The closed solicitation has been included below for reference: The University of Northern Iowa is currently in the design phase of a project titled Industrial Technology Center Modernization and has been authorized by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa to proceed with procurement of construction manager services where the construction manager is at risk. The University intends to retain a construction management firm to join the project team during the design phase and to continue through the construction, occupancy, closeout and warranty phases of the project. The University is requesting submittals from firms who can demonstrate they have resources, experience and qualifications to provide construction management services for the project. The Industrial Technology Center Modernization project is expected to include offices, classrooms, labs, and support spaces for the following academic programs: Construction Management, Graphic Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Technology Management, Electrical Engineering Technology, Technology and Engineering Education and the Metal Casting Center. Existing spaces will be modernized; and additional program space constructed. The CMaR is required to furnish a performance and payment surety bond on the Universitys form in the amount of 100% of the Contract Sums as security for faithful performance of the Agreements and for the payment of all persons performing labor and furnishing materials for the work. The team of OPN Architects have been selected as the design professional for this project and will participate in the selection of the construction manager. The project budget is $44,776,000. The estimated construction budget is $28,520,000.
