Renovation of an educational facility in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Completed plans call for the renovation of a educational facility.
**As of April 18, 2023, project was awarded to A.R. Chesson Construction Co. but awarded amount is not available.** The proposed development at this site is planned to consist of constructing a drone park that will include a 100-foot by 250-foot slab on grade flight practice field. The practice field will be surrounded by 4-foot tall chain link fencing with an approximate 55-foot tall safety net barrier above. Originally, the structure was proposed to be of timber pole frame design. However, it is our understanding that the uplift and lateral forces exceed that of the capabilities of the timber poles. As such, the vertical safety netting will be supported by steel framing and will include either metal roof decking or horizontal safety net "ceiling". The steel frame structure will be supported by shallow foundations or alternative drilled shafts (caissons). The maximum axial compression loads indicated by the structural engineer of record are not expected to exceed about 25 kips. It was indicated that the finished grade elevations of the slab on grade will enerally coincide with existing grades. Accordingly, cut and/or fill thicknesses of less than 1- foot are anticipated to be required to establish design grade elevations.
