Renovation of an educational facility in Edmonton, Alberta. Completed plans call for the renovation of a educational facility.
The Education Centre is a complex of buildings encompassing education teaching spaces at the U of A, including Education Centre South and Education Centre North. Both buildings are early 1960's, with the original envelope and structures intact. The current electrical service is in Education Centre South basement and fed through a sub-grade duct bank to adjoining Education Centre North. The University of Alberta has committed to electrical primary and secondary building distribution and power upgrades in the facility which requires a new electrical vault space. These upgrades would accommodate higher electrical demand (including upgrade from 208V to 600V service) and retire outdated electrical switchgears which can no longer be maintained. The new vault will be constructed below grade, linking up the Education Centre South existing vault with Education Centre North at basement level. It will be located directly beneath the east courtyard with renovated landscape features. 3.1 Phase 1: This includes existing electrical duct bank decant and transition to temporary power and communication services. The intention is to have the existing duct bank services refed by May 2021 prior to new vault construction. This work will be conducted by either internal trades or contractor. Temporary conductors have been completed between the south and north vaults. Phase 2: Excavation, selective demolition, and new vault construction. At grade, this phase will entail restoration of the existing north-east courtyard and a new raised access hatch shaft. The latter will provide primary access for vault electrical switchgear equipment transport, along with fresh air intake. The selective demolition and restoration of the site affords the opportunity to improve the landscaping. The vault footprint maintains a safe proximity to existing Linden tree roots. Ground-breaking is intended for early May 2021, with completion by early December 2021. Phase 3: New electrical gear installation, feeding and distribution, including transition from temporary power service to permanent power service being fed from new switch gear. Demolition of all temporary services by University trades. Completion of mechanical ductwork inside vault. The Issued for Pre-Tender Drawings dated March 21, 2021 are for reference only.
