Existing system: The Forest Service is considering upgrades to the wastewater treatment facilities at the Bolar Mountain Recreation Area. The current wastewater system serves four campgrounds (138 campsites total), two dump stations, and restrooms for a swimming beach/picnic area. Wastewater is collected and pumped to a centralized Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC)/sand filter package sewage treatment plant. The treated sewage is discharged into Lake Moomaw under VPDES Permit 0032123 at 13,000 GPD. The existing package sewage treatment plant is approaching 40 years old and has experienced operation and maintenance issues. New system: Each campground, dump station and picnic area will have septic tanks to collect solids. Septic tank volume will be twice the daily flow per area. The current grinder pump stations will be replaced with effluent pump stations. The effluent pump stations will include a large dosing tank to dose effluent to a central treatment location. Due to infiltration/inflow issues described by Forest Service employees, new force mains and sewer mains will replace the existing sewerage. A centralized package treatment plant is proposed near the proposed dripfield. The treated effluent will be collected in a large dosing tank to dose the drainfield. Treated effluent will be to Treatment Level 2 standards (BOD: 30 mg/l, TSS: 30 mg/l), plus TN reduction to 8 mg/l prior to dispersal or 5 mg/l in the dispersal field. The drainfield will consist of a multi-zoned shallow placed drip dispersal drainfield. Number of lines will be determined as the design develops. Based on the soil evaluation and permeability tests for 14,000 GPD, the dripfield will consist of approximately 38,976 linear feet of drip tubing. The drip tubing will be installed 3 inches deep and required 9 inches of cover material over the entire dripfield.
