Conceptual plans call for site work for a transportation facility; for paving for a transportation facility; for the renovation of a transportation facility; and for outdoor lighting for a transportation facility.
Plans call to extend Runway 17/35 and improve instrument approaches. Rehabilitate existing infrastructure such as aprons and taxiways. Strengthen airfield pavements. Improve the taxiway system. Plan for ultimate closure of Runway 8/26. Establish future development areas. Other plans call for reconstruction of the taxiways A and C, rehabilitate other taxiways and upgrade standards, reconstruct the airport's apron, evaluate runway weight bearing capacity, and extend and decouple Runway 17. The project is included in the master plan for the San Marcos Regional Airport as a capital improvement initiative slated for the next five to ten years. It is eligible for approximately $34.2 million in grant funding through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program.
