Construction of 5,880sf salt storage building including concrete floors, lighting, electrical, site utilities, and 4,200sf lean-to covered storage Location -District 6: Litchfield Team Section Headquarters The project consists of the construction of salt and cold storage structures for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), located on East Frontage Street in Litchfield, Illinois. The salt storage and cold storage structures are anticipated cover areas of 5,880 and 6,300 square feet, respectively. The storage structures are anticipated to be single-story structures with a concrete apron. Detailed loading information is not currently available. This report is based on estimated column loads of 75 kips for both structures. The borings encountered existing fill consisting of crushed rock, sand, cinders and lean clay to an approximate depth of 3 feet. Below the fill, the natural soils consisting of soft to very stiff, lean and fat clays with trace amounts of sand and occasionally gravel. Very loose, clayey sand was encountered in Boring B-2. Auger refusal, indicative of bedrock, did not occur. Groundwater was encountered in Borings B-1 and B-2 at 15 and 14 feet, respectively. Groundwater levels might not have stabilized before backfilling, which is typical in less permeable cohesive soil. Consequently, the lack of indicated groundwater levels might not represent present or future levels. Project has been cancelled.
