Renovation of approximately 61,753 gross square feet of the Library Building to create a contemporary facility that extends the life of the building for more than forty-years. The building will be comprehensively renovated and to include improvements to structural, mechanical, and electrical systems to meet contemporary code requirements. Level 0 and 1 which currently hold the performance hall, drama theatre, and lecture halls will be converted to accommodate new flexible classrooms, study and instructional breakout spaces on level . The existing performance hall on the south end of this level will remain and be fully renovated. To accomplish this modification a new floor slab at level 1 will be inserted in the large lecture hall, the theatre and the 2 smaller lecture halls at the north end. The concrete tiered slab below this new floor will remain. Improvements to daylight will be achieved by removing portions of concrete walls on the east and west of facades of Level 1. On the upper most levels (top 2 floors) new configurations of library program, e-learning, student media center, teaching and learning center and information commons will be reconfigured. These spaces will be created within the existing footprint of the upper levels. Existing exterior building envelope needs to be updated to meet current energy code. Work includes above and below grade walls, floor overhangs, and all roof assemblies. Structural improvements include lateral strengthening to achieve life safety seismic performance objectives. Existing concrete shear walls lack adequate capacity to resist seismic loading. Existing seismic joints are too small to accommodate expected lateral displacements. Mechanical improvements include using water to air heat pumps, variable air volume units, upgrades to air handling units (including fan wall system) and heat recovery. Plumbing systems are in poor condition and need to be upgraded to meet code. A new fire sprinkler system throughout the building will be installed. Electrical improvements include replacement of existing switchboards, MCCs panels and transformers. All new interior lighting throughout. The Project designed to meet LEED Silver minimum requirements.
