The Lake Avenue and Skokie Boulevard intersection experiences a high number of vehicular accidents and is a safety concern for pedestrians. The traffic signals also do not meet current Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards and IDOT design requirements. Safety will be improved by eliminating corner islands and by providing tighter corner radii in the NE and SW corners, which aids in slowing down traffic at the intersections, hence creating more safe crossing conditions for pedestrians. Crosswalks will be relocated to locations that reduce the crossing distances. New traffic signals will be provided that meet the current standards, and curb ramps will be improved.
