Nokom's House is planned to be a single-storey, approx. 135 m2 (1,450 ft2), the lab that will include research space consisting of a kitchen, gathering space (dining table), lounge space, one-on-one consultation room, and porch. The remaining footprint is comprised of washrooms, storage, and utility spaces. The landscape surrounding the building is proposed to include moderately sized food and medicine gardens, an outdoor cooking area, and a sacred fire site. The proposed greenfield site is a former tree nursery within the Arboretum and tucked between Guelph Centre for Urban Organic Farming and the University of Guelph water tower, located just off College Ave. East, Guelph Ontario. Subject to approval by the Board of Governors, the University initially anticipated a preliminary building construction budget of $1.59 million (not including building fit-out and taxes), based on schematic design study completed in April 2020. However, upon validating the initial schematic design study in 2022, the construction budget has increased to $2.19 million (not including building fit-out and taxes). As part of the assignment, the University would be looking for potential cost savings to reduce the budget back closer to $1.59 million. The Consultant has estimated the construction period for the full extent of the proposed work taking from January/24 to December/24 to complete.
