The Cowichan Valley Trail (CVT) is a 120 km multi-use non-motorized recreational and active transportation trail connecting communities through the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). This RFP pertains to improvements to a 5 km section of the CVT from Waters Road Trail Head South, through Electoral Area E, Cowichan Station/Sahtlam/Glenora. This section of the trail is accessed through Glenora Trails Head Park. The trail section here is composed of the original rail bed. Over time the built-up rail bed surface has deteriorated with smaller gravels forming pot holes and ruts. Improvements to this section of the trail will establish an all-weather multi-use gravel surfaces suitable for bikes, walking/hiking and horseback riding. The trail will be built up and crowned with gravel materials following the trail construction standard established by the CVRD for a 3.0 metre wide multi-use trail. Problem drainage areas will be addressed through re-profiling the grade of the rail bed. Project works include, but may not be limited to, the following: Approximately 2.5 km of ditch clearing; Grading to even out the trail sub grade and ensure water is able to drain from the trail surface; Trail sub grade preparation including delivery and placement of aggregate materials to fill ruts, pot holes and to cover exposed cobbles and other trip hazards; and Delivery, placement and compaction of trail surfacing gravel materials along approximately 4,670 metres of rail trail to create an all-weather, consistent trail surface that serves trail visitors or all ages and abilities.
