The St. Cloud Civic Center opened in 1988 as a 110,000 square foot convention facility. In January 2012 the second phase of a major expansion was completed, bringing the facility to 195,000 square feet. After several years' effort the City secured state bonding support for completion of the project - an $11.56 million parking ramp adjacent to the facility in December 2016. The original building is now 30 years old and requires replacement of some major mechanical elements. In 2019, the City engaged the Apex group to assess and inventory mechanical and structural needs of our community facilities. Major critical expenditures needed at the Convention Center include: Replacement of original roof ($1,510,000), Replacement of original roof top units and HVAC controls ($2,100,000) and, Replacement of original The roof and mechanical elements listed above are all well beyond their reasonable life expectancies. The facility is experiencing increasing frequency of repairs, raising the burden on the operating budget. Some of the HVAC components are no longer made and must be fabricated to make repairs. Extraordinary repair costs in 2017 exceeded $80,000; 2018 extraordinary costs were about $45,000 but responsibility for one major item is in dispute, so the total may rise. As December 15, 2022, this project is currently in the FY 2023 - 2028 CIP. Funding for this project is allotted in the city's capital improvement plan for construction FY 2024. A firm timeline has not been established; however, construction is scheduled for Fiscal Year 2024. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
