Lake Wheeler Road is a multi-faceted improvement project that will span from Maywood Street to north of Dorothea Drive including but not limited to widening the typical section to a 2 Lane Divided Avenue with median, installing sidewalks, and bikeway to improve connectivity for all users and create a custom streetscape corridor to serve as a gateway to Dorothea Dix Park. The project will include the realignment of Lake Wheeler Road to be the primary through movement at the S Saunders Street intersection as well as other intersection treatments throughout the corridor that could include a new signal at Maywood Drive and roundabouts at Daladams Street and Hammel Street. Additional improvements outside of the Lake Wheeler Road corridor will include the Daladams Street extension into Dix Park and the installation of a multiuse path on the east side of S. Saunders Street to north of Doretha Drive. The Engineer will need experience managing a complex Project and demonstrate the ability to adapt to fluctuating challenges. This Project will involve a high level of coordination with the Dorothea Dix Park Master Plan, Dix Edge Area Study, Dix Park Plaza & Play Project, and numerous other public and private projects that are either currently in planning or have been approved for design and construction included in the Project Information Sheet below. Roadway improvements will also require coordination with Norfolk Southern Railroad as well as both public and private utilities including the relocation of Duke Energy transmission towers along the west edge of Lake Wheeler Road within the project limits.
