The construction of a water system interconnect with the Village of Palatine will provide valuable improvement to the water system infrastructure for both Villages. The improved infrastructure will greatly reduce the vulnerability of Village's north pressure zone, which receives water through two 16" transmission mains, one along Huntington Road north and the other along Ela Road. These two lines were installed in corrosive soil in the mid 1980's. Frequent water main breaks occurs on both line due to serious corrosion damage. Both lines have I-90 Tollway crossings in encasement. Recent construction at I-90 Tollway have increased the vulnerabilities of these two transmission water mains. A 16" water main break, especially at the Tollway crossing, is difficult to repair. Water storage for the zone has a very much limited capacity. Village water customers of the entire zone would lose water services if main breaks occur simultaneously on both lines and the breaks fail to get repaired quickly. A thorough engineering study with conceptual plans for the system interconnect was completed two years ago and the conclusion indicates the proposed interconnection is fully feasible. The project is included in the city's 2021-2025 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
