Botetourt County is soliciting quotes to rebuild a chimney on the historic slave cabin at the Greenfield Preservation Area. The kitchen/dwelling was first constructed as a single kitchen in the first quarter of the 19th century. The foundation is uncoursed limestone and a handmade brick chimney stack. The chimney will be reconstructed to support a functional fireplace. This will include new firebricks and a clay flue liner set in clay fire mortar. The kitchen is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, NRHP. The work will have to be completed with the Secretary of the Interior Standards, with all of the replacement materials, stating what those materials are. This will also require an archaeological investigation as part of the chimney foundation. Contact: Stephanie Sparks
