(KSNB) - Kearney City Council will vote during Tuesday's meeting to approve a $4.9 million bid to construct a new water tower in the city. Back in December, the City Council approved plans for the construction of a new 2 million gallon elevated water reservoir to be located east of N Avenue and South of 48th Street. According to memo to council from Director of Utilities Anton Jelinek, he said the new water tower will increase the city's water storage capacity by 1.75 MG. He goes on to say this increase will reduce the number of times the wells within the Platte River Well Filed start and stop, thus reducing maintenance and wear and tear on this infrastructure. The added capacity will also improve the city's overall firefighting capacity and provide room for future growth and development within the city's public water supply system and its master planning.
The city received a total of six bids from four bidders on Feb. 15. The recommendation to council by staff and the city engineer is for the contract to be awarded to Caldwell Tanks, of Louisville, KY, who submitted a bid for a composite water tower for $4,973,000. The Utilities Department is financing the 2.0 MG Elevated Water Tower project with a Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Loan. The loan will be repaid over 20 years at an interest rate of 0.0%. Water fees will require an increase of approximately three percent each year over the next three years to fund the new debt service incurred for this project.
