This project involves site work in the Fort courtyard. The contractor will install a new yard drainage system in the Fort courtyard; grade the construction area, install new courtyard lighting, landscaping improvements, and several other minor items. Construction documents include drawings and specifications produced by Bender & Associates, Architects. A permit is available for pick up at the City of Key West however, the fees will be the contractor responsibility. The work of this project involves a significant historic site; one that was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Construction on Fort East Martello began in 1862, as one of a series of forts designed and built during the U.S. Civil War. All work activities must be undertaken with sufficient care to protect this historic resource. All project work must be in compliance with the Secretary of Interior Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation, as administered by the Florida Department of State, Division of Historic Resources and must be coordinated with the project architect, Bender & Associates, Architects. The Contractor will be responsible to obtain all necessary permits and approvals for the work. Fort East Martello is an active museum and art gallery operated by the Key West Art and Historical Society (KWA&HS). The fort is comprised of a museum, art gallery, citadel, grounds, gift store, and other fort structures open to the public every day of the week. The fort also hosts various tours and educational programs. The fort will remain open to the public during construction, with only active construction areas temporarily closed to the public during the project. Work must be planned and organized in a way to minimize impacts to ongoing KWA&HS operations as much as practical. Public safety is imperative.
