Site work and new construction of a power facility in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Conceptual plans call for the construction of a power facility.
Plans may result in the construction of a carbon capture plant that uses post-combustion, amine CO2 capture technology or other possible proven technologies to capture CO2 emissions originating during operations. The City has two power plant sites located 7 kilometers apart. The main power plant is located on Hwy 1 and the TransCanada bridge over the sought Saskatchewan River which has two LM60000PD units (units 14 and 15) with HRSG's and two LM2500 DLE units (units 10 and 11) with HRSG's along with two 33MW GE steam turbines. The steam turbines are also supplemented by a 150,000 lb/hr 900 psig gas fired Power Boilder along with duct firing on al HRSG's. Total MW output of the main plant is 137.4 MW on Gas Turbines alone and a total of 203 MWs with the Steam Turbines. The north-side power station (remote plant) is comprised of two LM6000 PF units (41.5MWs each) these are both simple cycle units and are named Unit 16 and Unit 17 (currently under construction and scheduled to come online at the end of March 2022). Unit 17 has an SCR system for removing NOx as well as 4MWe heat recovery unit for heating incoming combustion air on both units. Total MW output of all City of Medicine Hat assets will be 286MW's. TIMELINE: A pre-Feed study has been completed. The project has received $5 million from Natural Resources Canada to continue with Front-End-Engineering Design study (FEED). At this time, Imperial Oil Ltd. has been approved to take over the Carbon Sequestration Evaluation Agreement (CSEA) and undertake feasibility work to determine whether the geology is appropriate for permanent CO2 storage. Further details and project schedules may be confirmed mid-/late 2025. *Cost for the initial evaluation phase of the project is approx. $13M.
