https://www.mrt.com/news/article/Dragon-Trail-in-Mecosta-and-Newaygo-counties-gets-17447297.php MECOSTA, NEWAYGO COUNTIES -- The Michigan Dragon Trail at Hardy Dam project received a funding boost recently when the Newaygo County Board of Commissioners appropriated over $1 million of American Rescue Plan Act funds to completion of the project, according to a news release from Newaygo County parks director Nick Smith. These newly allocated funds will pay for the completion of new (2022) construction in Newaygo County and two more phases in 2023, most notably a fully ADA-accessible mile of trail starting at Big Prairie Township's Operator Park, the news release said. "It is important that people of all abilities can experience Michigan's Dragon at Hardy Dam," Smith said in the news release. "This mile of accessible trail will allow wheelchair accessibility, and the trailhead will include handicapped parking so everyone can explore the Dragon Trail." Completion of the Dragon Trail, which will encompass part of Newaygo County and Mecosta County, will help meet the increasing demand for recreation and tourism in the region, Smith said. The 2022 construction season is adding a projected 14 miles to the previously constructed 22 miles completed since breaking ground on the project in 2019. Current construction includes an estimated 7.6 miles of trail from Newaygo State Park, continuing north and connecting to Brower Park in Mecosta County. Once the Newaygo State Park and Brower Park connection is completed, construction will move south to complete the remaining portions of the trail in Mecosta County, eventually connecting with the trailhead at Big Bend Township Park. With the recent Mecosta County board of commissioners' allocation of $225,000, the two counties have ensured that the remaining construction phases are fully funded, the news release said. Once complete, the Dragon Trail will be made up of 11 segments forming a complete 40-plus mile loop around Hardy Pond, traversing both Mecosta and Newaygo counties. Of the 22 miles already open to the public, 12 miles of trail are in Newaygo County and 8 miles of trail are in Mecosta County. Later this fall, the 7.6-mile connection between Newaygo State Park and Brower County Park will be open to the public, the news release said. The Dragon Trail already sees many visitors, including mountain bikers, hikers, trail runners and more, according to the news release. Restaurants, campgrounds and other businesses are experiencing the economic benefit of the Dragon Trail. A Michigan State University economic impact study estimated the annual economic impact to the region at over $4 million.
