Longtime donors Tricia and Rusty Penick pledged $5 million to the campaign, UH announced Aug. 16. They previously supported UH's TDECU Stadium and Fertitta Center, and the playing surface within the Fertitta Center bears the Penick family name. "The continued rise of Houston Athletics is something that Trish and I are very passionate about," said Rusty Penick, co-founding partner and former CEO of Maintenance Supply Headquarters. "Tremendous progress has been made, but the most important work is still in front of us. When we start play in the Big 12 [Conference], we expect to win. The campaign and, more specifically, the Football Operations Center is essential to this expectation. Trish and I feel fortunate, therefore, to be able to support in such a meaningful and important way." In June, UH announced its new Houston Rise campaign aimed to raise $150 million to prepare for the move to the Big 12. It's since raised over $30 million, with a significant portion of that specifically dedicated to the construction of the Football Operations Center, UH said Aug. 16. The 100,000-square-foot FOC is the campaign's fundamental priority. It "will feature cutting-edge amenities and service Houston Football student-athletes and coaches in an unprecedented manner," UH said in July. "Perhaps most importantly, it will instantly impact Houston's recruiting efforts, with the competition for talent across the country at an all-time high." The FOC will contain the team's training space, locker room, health and nutrition space, and staff offices, UH Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman told the Houston Business Journal in January. The new facility will be constructed between TDECU Stadium and the team's indoor practice facility on the west side of the UH campus. As of January, Pezman estimated that it will take around 36 months to construct the new football operations center, which could break ground as soon as this fall. In July, Head Football Coach Dana Holgorsen called the center the "missing piece for us at the moment." In addition to funding the new football center, the campaign will also pay to modernize the Athletics-Alumni Center for Olympic sports programs, complete enhancements to the Guy V. Lewis Development Facility for men's and women's basketball, and improve other existing athletics facilities. Meanwhile, UH also received a $4 million gift from the Dakri family this week. That donation will support the new Center for Economic Inclusion in the C.T. Bauer College of Business, which just launched in May.
