The City of Mankato has made extensive investment in a number of significant public infrastructure facilities adjacent to the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers. Facilities such as the Water Resource Recovery Facility, Riverfront Park, the Minnesota River Trail, Sibley Park, the Water Treatment Plant, Land Of Memories Park and shallow horizontal collector wells Nos. 13 and 15. Over about the last decade the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers have been subject to more frequent, higher intensity and longer duration floods. Because of this, many of the assets that are near the rivers are facing various levels of risk for damage or failure due to the erosion of the riverbanks. The area of highest risk for impact to a critical asset is at well 15. Well 15 is located on the west side of Land of Memories Park on the Minnesota River. This well represents about 40% of the firm municipal drinking water supply for the City of Mankato. Since 2009 the distance between the riverbank and the well house fence as gone from 73-feet to 15-feet. This is a loss of 58 feet of riverbank, with over 50% of that taking place in the last 3 year.
This project is in included in the City of Mankato's FY 2022-2026 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). As of May 24, 2022, information regarding a design team or a general contractor is not available. Funding is anticipated from 2022 to 2026.*
