Steam is supplied to the Vancouver General Hospital (“VGH”) complex from the Energy Centre (central boiler plant) built in 1999, which is adjacent to the parkade on 12th Avenue. The main steam ring serving the VGH campus is fed by two separate main branches (as required for redundancy, CSA Z317.2). The East branch was constructed at the time the new Energy Centre was built, presently operates satisfactorily, and is considered the main branch. However, the second (West) branch connects via underground piping using a former (abandoned) interconnection with manhole MH-PN (Parkade North, formerly labeled as a duplicated number MH-12). The manhole MH-PN is structurally in poor shape and anchors on numerous slip joints have sheared off the anchor bolts and the anchoring has failed from inside of MH-PN. In addition, existing manholes MH-L-13, MH-CC, and MH-PN do not have venting or openings to the atmosphere that are known to provide natural ventilation. This project is undertaken in order to realize the replacement of an existing steam manhole (manhole MH-PN) which is showing signs of structural failure and the replacement of existing steam pipe anchors at slip joints. In addition, the installation of a ventilation system on existing steam manholes to meet the latest WorkSafeBC OHS guidelines and local building code.
