St. Louis County Jail in Duluth, Minn., will need to be renovated/remodeled/replaced. Immediate renovation needs will be addressed within the County's current budget. It is intended that these short-term solutions will hopefully bridge the gap until the full project can be implemented. The Sheriff's Office is focusing on the changing needs of its jail's current population and how best to manage individuals safely. Current facilities do not meet the increased need for mental health and substance use programing, specialty housing and staffing considerations. The goal with this project is to create a facility that meets the needs of St. Louis County and our communities for many years to come. This project is included Saint Louis County Fiscal Year 2026-2029 Capital Improvement Program. As of April 9, 2026, information regarding design firm, construction manager, and general contractor has not been released.
