Demolition, site work, paving and new construction of a bridge / tunnel in Norwood, Massachusetts. Design plans call for the construction of a bridge / tunnel; for the demolition of a bridge / tunnel; for site work for a bridge / tunnel; and for paving for a bridge / tunnel.

The work for the bridge carrying US Route 1 over the Neponset River shall consist of reconstructing the bridge and approach wearing surface; removing and replacing the reinforced concrete deck slab; upgrading the bridge rails; checking the existing beams cover plates for fatigue and providing modifications as needed; repairing the existing substructure; and fully cleaning and painting the structural steel. The expected structural work shall consist of, but not be limited to the following: o The existing concrete deck shall be replaced with the department's 4000psi HP deck concrete composite with the existing beams. The consultant may consider using an 8 3/4 inch exposed concrete deck, or an 8 inch concrete deck with 3 1/2 inch Bituminous wearing surface. The consultant shall produce a rating for whichever option is used. Either option shall maintain a slope similar to the existing roadway slope. The existing shear connectors shall be replaced with new shear connectors designed per latest AASHTO standards. o The end of bridge joint shall be replaced with the slab-over detail as in the Bridge Manual. o The approach roadways and median barriers shall be replaced as needed within the limits of work, as required for the completion of the deck replacement. o The new sidewalk, according to Bridge Manual design, will require 5.5 feet of side walk width along the Southbound roadway. o A new safety curb along the Northbound roadway shall be installed according to Bridge Manual design. o New S3-TL4 bridge barrier shall be used, and new highway guard rail transitions shall be located on all four corners of the bridge. o The existing Beam Cover Plates shall be checked for fatigue and provided with modifications as needed, and structural steel shall be fully cleaned and painted. (Environmental concerns may be warranted due to the proximity to the Neponset River) o The existing Abutments and Wingwalls shall be repaired as needed. Over the next five years. MassDOT expects to invest over $3 billion repairing the Commonwealth’s Bridges. This includes $816 million already programmed in the STIP using BIL’s reauthorization of existing programs, $1.1 billion under BIL’s new Bridge Formula Program, and $1.25 billion in bonding authority under the Commonwealth’s Next Generation Bridge Program.
