For the purposes of applying this qualification, a bridge is defined as a structure whose span is 4.5 meters or more. Following the spirit of this qualification, the duly qualified contractor may be awarded complex work contracts among the following: Construction of certain types of new bridges; Replacement of decks of certain types of existing bridges ; Certain bridge repair or reinforcement work. To be considered as complex construction work by the Minister, and thus be able to be reserved for qualified contractors, this work must target the construction of the following structures: Overpasses (over a road or railway line); Single-span bridges, greater than 40 meters; Multi-span bridges; Bridges with cast-in-place prestressed concrete decks; Bridges with a bias of more than 35 degrees; Non-routine bridges, including: cable, arch, truss, box girder, crutch, curved, movable bridges and road tunnels; Bridges using Accelerated Construction Technique (ABC), including: precast slab panels, precast deck systems, and deck side slips. Culverts and steel-wood bridges (steel beams and wood decking) are not considered complex work. To be considered as complex repair work by the Minister, and thus be able to be reserved for qualified contractors, this work must cover the following repair work: Reinforcement of a bridge using prestressing cables; Reinforcement of a bridge using bonded composite materials; Replacement of the slab on beam of a bridge in more than two phases of work, excluding the connection phases (whose width is less than 2 m); Reconstruction of the exterior sides of a thick slab or reinforced concrete portal type bridge; Replacement of hangers or stays for cable bridges; Repair to the walls or roof of a road tunnel.
