Site work and new construction of a transportation facility in Victoria, British Columbia. Completed plans call for the construction of a 25,704-square-foot, one-story above grade transportation facility; and for site work for a transportation facility.

TIMELINE: Prequalification (RFQ 22.059) closed; three proponents prequalified. Invited RFP to the three prequalified firms has closed. An award is expected by mid-November 2022. BC Transit has initiated replacement of the existing handyDART facility, necessary to accommodate future growth from an aging and growing population as the existing facility is at capacity. The proposed new facility will be located at 2401 Burnside Road in View Royal, BC, a strategic location with nearby arterial connections to serve the greater Victoria region and accommodate continuing growth in western communities. The new facility will help support inclusive public transportation services in the region for people who have permanent or temporary disabilities that prevent them from using fixed-route transit without assistance from another person. The Project will see the construction of a new operations and maintenance centre that provides administrative space and a transit yard to accommodate 110 custom transit buses, with five maintenance bays, temporary on-site fueling, automated bus wash and a service island. The site will initially serve a mix of fleet of gas and electric vehicles, eventually transitioning to a fully electric fleet. It will be LEED Gold V4 certified administrative building and meet Step Code 3 energy code requirements. Early works currently underway include the realignment of the Galloping Goose Regional Trail, roadwork and infrastructure improvements on Burnside Rd West and Watkiss Way, realignment of a watercourse, soil removal and import, and wick drain installations followed by a site settlement period. Design and procurement is underway for a new BC Hydro Transmission tower to be located approximately 70m NW of the existing tower and decommissioning of existing tower and Rogers Telecommunication station in late fall 2022 or early spring 2023. The successful Proponent will provide construction management services, and will be responsible for providing a fully commissioned operations and maintenance centre.
