PCL Constructors Canada Inc. has been selected by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) as the Construction Manager for the CAMH Phase 1D Research Building project, on the Queen Street Campus in Toronto, Ontario. The project is currently in the pre-construction phase, with Design Development complete and the design team transitioning into Construction Documents late in the second quarter of 2022. Erection of the above grade structure is currently expected to commence in 2025. The building structure is unique in that it employs several structural systems throughout the building, including structural steel, concrete and mass timber. The structural framing for levels four to seven consists of a composite timber and two-way concrete slab system supported on a combination of timber and composite timber-and-steel columns. The composite floor system consists of mass timber panels with a thick structural topping slab. The topping slab is voided with recycled polypropylene or HDPE plastic balls, displacing concrete, reducing weight and embodied carbon. The timber and concrete act compositely in the direction parallel to the wood fibre, while the concrete column strips act as wide flat beams between supports in the direction perpendicular to the wood fibre, eliminating the need for beams below the deck.
