Renovation of an educational facility in Athens, Georgia. Completed plans call for the renovation of a educational facility.

As of August 8, 2024, this project is scheduled to start September 17, 2024 per the Owner. As of November 28, 2023, prequalification is still open and interested parties are encouraged to visit https://www.whiting-turner.com/subcontractor-prequalification/ in order to get an invite to this project. Bid packages and scopes of work are pending. Project is currently scheduled to start August 2024. As of May 2, 2023, the project is early in design and is currently scheduled to begin construction June of 2024. Project will bid to pre-qualified subcontractors first quarter 2024. Due to material time leads, MEP packages may be bid late 2023. No inquiries requested at this time. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From original RFQ. Project generally consist of one-story west wing with the main entrance and classrooms, a high-rise north wing with a north auditorium, and a multistory east wing. Around 1970 an addition was added to the south and in 1975 a one-story vivarium was added to the east. The SHM2 will focus on renovating approximately 81,000 GSF of space of the multi-story 1960s east wing. While the spaces outside of the renovation area are not included in this phase of renovations, the SHM2 scope includes design and sequencing of building systems (potentially with some temporary systems) and life safety requirements to ensure that all remaining occupied spaces remain functional during the renovations. While SHM2 will generally be limited to an interior renovation, there may be some minor exterior site work for equipment pads to support new electrical equipment and / or temporary equipment to support the occupied areas. Exterior building enclosure work is not anticipated with the exception of the replacement of the roof and some of the exterior doors, and removal of exterior mechanical system components attached to the exterior facades that will no longer be utilized. The renovated space will support STEM related research for a variety of Principal Investigators and their teams. This will consist of flexible open labs, support spaces, write-up stations, offices, and collaboration spaces. While there will be fume hoods and bio-safety cabinets in the wet lab research areas it will generally be medium to low intensity (as compared to a high intensity chemistry laboratory). The primary circulation corridors are anticipated to be maintained and the project will include comprehensive new building systems, finishes, and IT replacement. Renovated labs are anticipated to provide higher quality, more flexible environments for contemporary research needs. A significant portion of the project is the design of the replacement of building systems. From a sustainability perspective, this is anticipated to contribute to reduced, more efficient resource consumption within the facility. Safety and accessibility improvements will bring the facility into closer alignment with current codes and operational expectations. Improvements to the building systems should be designed to increase energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
