Tuscaloosa National Airport has been approved for $1.053 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to expand its terminal. According to AL.com, the funding is a discretionary grant through the American Rescue Plan and will enable airport leaders to update terminal apron pavement, connect taxiways and update an area that is used for emergency response. Currently, the Tuscaloosa airport has 110 aircraft and 62 hangars on site, and officials have plans for further expansion to boost economic development efforts for the region. ___________________________________________________________________ The project will accomplish the reconstruction of the airport's 600' x 300' terminal apron pavement and connecting Taxiways A2 and G, along with an adjacent apron pavement area serving the airport's aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) facility. In all, approximately 28,000 square yards of existing pavement will be reconstructed and another nearly 2,700 square yards resurfaced, along with associated pavement edge lighting and pavement markings, including approximately 4,080 cubic yards of cement concrete pavement (CCP) material, nearly 8,500 tons of asphalt mix pavement (AMP) materials, and approximately 600 tons of cement to be utilized for subgrade and base stabilization. If funding permits, an alternative bid schedule will include an expansion of the terminal apron for an additional 3,590 square yards of new pavement, including approximately 700 additional cubic yards of CCP materials and 1,180 additional tons of AMP materials.
