The current Police Training Academy building is antiquated and needs to be replaced with a new facility. The proposed location for the new academy is adjacent to the Police gun range off of Hwy 380. Since the land is owned by the City there is no acquisition cost for the site. Classrooms, offices, and break areas can all be under one roof. Currently, for handgun and rifle practice/training, the cadet class has to travel 26 miles from the Academy to the Range location. There is a small classroom currently on-site at the Gun Range, but this building is also quite old and the bathroom area needs to be expanded. Water service will have to be extended out to this address. This project is included in the city’s fy 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Program. As of November 11, 2024, construction began on January 3, 2024, with completion scheduled for September 30, 2025.
