This project provides funding to implement recommendations provided from the structural assessment of Idols Dam. The low head dam at Idols was originally built in 1898 and since its original construction has not had any significant maintenance or repair work completed. This dam and associated infrastructure are essential to maintain a sufficient pool of water for the three 50 MGD pumps in the Idols Raw Water Pump Station that supplies approximately 70% of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities water. As of August 7, 2024, this project is included City of Winston-Salem FY 2024-2029 CIP. No further information regarding a design firm has been made available. A detailed timeline for construction has not yet been established. The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities owns and operates the historic Idols Dam which is located on the Yadkin River between Davie and Forsyth Counties. Idols Dam maintains an upstream pool level adequate for the Idols pump station water supply intake located approximately 300- feet upstream of the dam. The dam was built over 100 years ago and needs rehabilitation. The tailrace downstream of the Obermeyer gates and the main channel of the river behind the dam are separated by a masonry and concrete retaining wall that has failed in some sections. These walls also have multiple visible cracks, spalls, and offsets. The selected engineering firm will provide assessment, documentation, and recommendations for the structural integrity of the dam, concrete and masonry walls of the tailrace, and all associated structures. Due to Idols Dam being a historic structure, additional permitting and coordination may be required. The method of contractor selection has not been determined at this time
